It does seem to be pretty good, though being the first text adventure, it's a bit of a prototype. A programmer and really good spelunker named Willie Crowther made it, partly for his daughters when he was missing them. What he did was make a remarkably good reproduction of his favourite cave, put some fantasy roleplaying in, and gave it a natural language parser to make it accessible to non-programmers. People spread it around the ARPAnet and other parts of the nascent Internet, often without asking permission to install it on the mainframes. :) And then it got expanded, so there's several different versions now. Here's a surprisingly fun page on its relationship to the real cave, with history, downloads & stuff on the same site.

So today we introduce Dr. XYZ, instructor of religions and lore. Who totally isn't prying.
Wait, what? XYZ? Isn't that some kind of weird error? Did we forget to replace the placeholder name?
I wrote this script without a clear idea of the character's name or appearance. So I put a placeholder name in the script.
Then Pam said, wouldn't it be cool if that was really her name?
Katie and I agreed. We've often talked about the background lore of the City, that it's a place where people regularly create and use their own names, possibly changing them several times throughout life. This teacher decided, for whatever reason, to simply adopt, or perhaps keep, if she wasn't from there, a placeholder name as a personal statement.
So how do you say it? Ecks-why-zee? Ecks-why-zed? Kszizz? I don't know. Maybe she doesn't care.
Or maybe that really is her family name. Strange place, strange names.
This page took a while for Katie to draw, but I think the results were worth it.
