Four girls from everywhere.
A school in the middle of somewhere.
A city at the edge of anywhere.
A school story like you'll find nowhere else.

The Extras is a modern take on a classic boarding school story, a slice-of-life comedy / fantasy about the everyday adventures of growing up. Located in the City, the School of Saints Java and Hellbender is as much a character in the story as the girls from almost everywhere who live and learn there, and just as full of secrets.

Shelby was mad enough about St. Hellbender taking an unintended gift that she took her complaint to the teacher.
So today we introduce Dr. XYZ, instructor of religions and lore. Who totally isn't prying.
Wait, what? XYZ? Isn't that some kind of weird error? Did we forget to replace the placeholder name?
I wrote this script without a clear idea of the character's name or appearance. So I put a placeholder name in the script.
Then Pam said, wouldn't it be cool if that was really her name?
Katie and I agreed. We've often talked about the background lore of the City, that it's a place where people regularly create and use their own names, possibly changing them several times throughout life. This teacher decided, for whatever reason, to simply adopt, or perhaps keep, if she wasn't from there, a placeholder name as a personal statement.
So how do you say it? Ecks-why-zee? Ecks-why-zed? Kszizz? I don't know. Maybe she doesn't care.
Or maybe that really is her family name. Strange place, strange names.

This page took a while for Katie to draw, but I think the results were worth it.

Shelby also likes the spinny chair.

It's cool to have an interesting set of initials. Better than inadvertently giving your offspring an inadvertent three-letter word. I know of a guy who went through life with the initials DUD.
Not many names I know of that begin with X, so that's pretty unique, too.

I think I know what Shelby's unintended petition might be, given the circumstances in which she was supposed to give Nita the pinwheel!

You may be right, or maybe Shelby is hanging on to something deeper. Maybe she's not even sure of it herself yet. Or maybe she just really wants to see new sights from her window.

Ohhh! You nearly had a reference to Colosal Cave Adventure, which is the first computer adventure game if I remember right. One of its magic words is XYZZY.

It does seem to be pretty good, though being the first text adventure, it's a bit of a prototype. A programmer and really good spelunker named Willie Crowther made it, partly for his daughters when he was missing them. What he did was make a remarkably good reproduction of his favourite cave, put some fantasy roleplaying in, and gave it a natural language parser to make it accessible to non-programmers. People spread it around the ARPAnet and other parts of the nascent Internet, often without asking permission to install it on the mainframes. :) And then it got expanded, so there's several different versions now. Here's a surprisingly fun page on its relationship to the real cave, with history, downloads & stuff on the same site.
