Four girls from everywhere.
A school in the middle of somewhere.
A city at the edge of anywhere.
A school story like you'll find nowhere else.

The Extras is a modern take on a classic boarding school story, a slice-of-life comedy / fantasy about the everyday adventures of growing up. Located in the City, the School of Saints Java and Hellbender is as much a character in the story as the girls from almost everywhere who live and learn there, and just as full of secrets.

Pebble is back! When you have non-traditional body forms in your comic, it can lead to some interesting body morphology discussions and thoughts.

Look at what Pebble is doing there in panel 3. Reaching up high. Up on her back legs, right? No!

Pebble is a sphinx. Sphinxes (at least in our story) have four arms and no legs. Since they use their arms for locomotion as well as the traditional tasks that we use arms for, we figure that sphinx arms are stronger than baseline human arms, but not as strong as legs. Sphinxes aren't nearly as bulky as they look, either- under all of that shaggy fur, the sphinx body form is actually rather light.

Still, arms lack an important component that legs have- a patella, or kneecap. The patella isn't just there to bash into things, or to protect the joint. It serves as an anchor point for muscles and ligaments, allowing bipeds like us to lock our legs in position, which allows us to stand comfortably for hours. Imagine if you didn't have patellas, and you had to be careful that your joint didn't bend the wrong way... which is part of the reason that human babies don't walk sooner than they do- they're born with cartilage instead of bone patellas, and they have to ossify before the walking achievement is unlocked.

So what Pebble is doing... is a handstand. She's supporting most of her body weight on a pair of arms, elbow and wrist joints. So give her credit for doing something that's tougher for her body form than it initially looks. Especially give credit to Katie and Pam, who worked out the visual details of how Pebble's limbs would look doing exactly that.

Sphinxes generally don't wear clothing for modesty- their thick fur being sufficient cover- but they do wear items for decoration or, in this case, utility.

Also, check out the young woman on the right side of panel 3. Who is that? You might not remember her, but she appeared allll the way back on page 3 of the comic... also in panel 3. Where's she been for the past 188 pages? Studying and keeping busy, of course!

Are sphinx "legs" similar to ape or monkey legs?

A bit, but mostly human. The palms might spread flat to better distribute weight like an ape. They're jointed like human arms / wrists and are of equal length, so a sphinx standing with weight evenly distributed will have a straight back.

We're glad you're enjoying the details. They get stuck in our brains and I think this is the healthiest way to let them out...
